In this current economic climate, it is important for both public and private businesses to work together to help create sustainable neighbourhoods. The social aspect of sustainability is key for a company that employs directly from local communities and conducts business that directly affects the places where people work and live.

Brookfield Rail believes in operating sustainably as being core to the success of our business. We respect anyone involved in or affected by our business, by acting ethically and by openly communicating with our people, our stakeholders and the community.

Brookfield Rail engages in community and corporate sponsorships, as well as providing in-kind support to a variety of activities and encouraging and supporting employee fundraising initiatives, including:

restoration and rehabilitation of the historic Rottnest Island Railway corporate support for the Hotham Valley Tourist Railway in-kind support for events such as the Avon Descent community events such as the Kulin Bush Races, Northam Concerts in the Park, Goldfields SES Challenge and the Narrogin Hawks Football Club, and employee driven fundraising for a wide range of causes.

Brookfield Rail is a proud major supporter of the Community Development Foundation which has developed the Passport initiative. Based on community request and in partnership with Brookfield Rail, the School Passport System was implemented at the following schools in 2011.

The School Passport System encourages positive contact and communication, enabling the school to emphasise the school to job/training pathway, and allowing for long term generational change. The system increases individual skill base by encouraging and rewarding community members to assist in varied activities across the school, sport and recreation and justice areas. The program is community run and driven, which has contributed to its sustainable nature. The benefits of this program are that results are visible and easily measured. All of this is made possible through an intrinsic reward system.
