Midwest Rail Infrastructure Upgrade

As manager of the operating railway in the Midwest, Brookfield Rail plays a crucial role in supporting developing mining projects in the region. Brookfield Rail is making a significant investment in its rail infrastructure in the Midwest to service customers in the region and ensure its long-term viability as a major provider of infrastructure to industry.

The largest investment program undertaken on the Brookfield Rail network in the last 40 years – to the tune of approximately $500 million – involves upgrading the existing rail infrastructure to enable an increase in tonnes transported on the network.

The upgrade includes:

  • construction of a new dual gauge line between Morawa and Mullewa

  • upgrading the existing line between Mullewa and Geraldton Port
  • Work on the upgrade started in January 2011, with construction timelines closely aligned with both our current and future customers’ needs.

Brookfield Rail’s commitment to the Midwest Rail Upgrade is a long-term, visionary commitment to investment in critical infrastructure that will support a significant export industry and our vital regional communities.
